Technical Author / Technical Writer required by our client – a leading international Innovation and Technology Consultancy to present technical information in a user-friendly, engaging manner.
Based in Plymouth and with great scope for remote working, you’ll enjoy an attractive salary of up to £40k and enjoy working with a close-knit team of engineers, developers and product marketing staff.
Technical Author – key skills & experience
- Ability to write user-friendly, engaging copy about highly technical subjects
- Ability to understand and accurately translate technical information for a general audience
- Proven experience of achieving verbal consistency and an appreciation of tone and style
- Excellent problem-solving ability and attention to detail
- Ability to use analytics to improve user-facing content
- Accurate and methodical approach to work
- Ability to work to tight schedules
- Excellent planning and organisational skills
- Analytical and questioning skills to get information from experts
- Ability to work successfully as part of a multidisciplinary team
Other ‘nice to have’ skills
- Knowledge of coding and scripting languages, such as C++, Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Familiarity with content and learning management systems (CMS and LMS)
- Facility with documentation publishing software, such as MadCap, RoboHelp, or Wikis
Technical Author -responsibilities
- Attend planning and briefing meetings
- Work closely with subject matter experts to clarify any technical issues
- Interview experts and sales and marketing specialists
- Work with translators and service providers
- Collect and edit complex information
- Produce new documents like manuals and instructions
- Update or rewrite existing documents
- Commission photographs or illustrations
- Work on digital or multi-channel content like blogs, e-learning or podcasts
- test what you’ve written with content users
- Create scripts for video tutorials
- Create infographics and screenshot mark-ups
- Create and build out user assistance infrastructure, including how-to sections, FAQs, and Help sections
A large part of your job will be spent researching and gathering the information required. To achieve this, you will need to use the product or service in question to understand the technology and applications for which documentation is being prepared and analyse the information needs of the user.
